The town of Monte Rio was once a major mecca for tourists at the junction of two railroads. Its quaint summer cottages have been turned into year-round homes. It still draws visitors to its historic inns and fine restaurants, and the town receives corporate and political dignitaries each summer at the exclusive Bohemian Grove.
A central point in the town is its funky Quonset-hut movie theater with parts of Christo's Running Fence as its ceiling and murals depicting the community's history. It not only features current films, but the marquee posts the birthdays of local citizens. Concerts are presented in Monte Rio's open-air amphitheater. The community also boasts a well-received theater group, Pegasus Theater Company.
Monte Rio Beach is a favorite gathering place on those hot summer days. Annual summer events include the `Big Rocky Games," a water carnival, which includes an evening flotilla, July 4th fireworks and the Bohemian Show.
